When dental patients have a severe dental phobia or anxiety, they can opt for sedation dentistry. This is a highly effective method to help patients remain calm and comfortable while receiving important dental treatments.

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using medication to help a patient relax during dental procedures. Sedation dentistry has a variety of benefits, including reducing pain during procedures, improving the patient’s experience, and making longer procedures shorter. Sedative dentistry is a great choice for patients who experience anxiety during dental visits. Medication is administered intravenously (IV), orally, or through inhalation.

Types of Sedation

  • Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is an excellent choice for many people, especially for those with a fear of the dentist. It’s safe, effective, and easy to control. It is taken in pill form orally an hour before the dental procedure. Patients take a small pill, usually Halcion, about an hour before their appointment. The effects of the pill work very quickly, so patients will be relaxed and calm by the time they arrive at our office.

  • Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, has been used safely in dentistry for decades. It is a mild sedative mixed with oxygen that is administered through a nose mask. The patient is able to breathe normally through small tubes in the nose, and within minutes, they become more relaxed. Laughing gas wears off quickly, and the patient feels normal again.

  • Intravenous (IV) Sedation

The dentist will administer the IV sedation to the patient intravenously and wait for it to take effect. Once it does, the dental work can begin. IV sedation provides patients with a deeper sense of relaxation. It does not render them unconscious, but it can make them more comfortable during a procedure. IV sedation can be used for both medical and cosmetic procedures.

  • General Anesthesia

This is the deepest form of sedation and is administered through an IV. The patient is completely unconscious and unable to feel anything.

What Are The Advantages of Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation can help a person relax during dental treatment. Feeling relaxed can help a patient feel less anxious about dental care. It can also make procedures that are uncomfortable or invasive seem less painful. In addition, it can reduce how much anesthetic is needed. Sedation can also help patients who have a hard time sitting still or holding their mouths open for long periods of time.
